Highlights of the new "SR 300" model:

Roasting Capacity:5 ounces by volume, not weight
equals FOUR of the 43 cc scoops enclosed with the roaster, OR a 1/2 cup measure not quite filled to the top.
Approximate weights for a full load roast are: 120 grams or 3.5 to 4 ounces - depending on the beans you are roasting

The CHAFF COLLECTING SYSTEM is quite effective, and consists of a two-piece unit that sits atop the roasting chamber. The chaff should be dumped after each roast, brushed out with a stiff brush after every 10 - 12 roasts, and cleaned in hot, soapy water whenever you begin to see a buildup of oily roasting residue on the screen, or if your roast times decrease significantly.
Proper roasting requires proper air flow, and the oily residue impedes the hot air exhausting through the top. A blocked screen causes the exhaust to be diverted back into the roasting chamber, leading to super fast roasts, which are akin to a steak cooked on too hot a fire - pretty, but rare inside - nice for steaks, but not coffee beans.

I've run through my second Fresh Roast 8 and have replaced it with the SR300. The SR300 is an improvement over the 8s; the main improvement is that it roasts about twice as much coffee at a time. It comes with a digital rather than a mechanical timer which ought to make roasting a bit more repeatable. I also think the chaff catcher design makes for easier emptying. It's main fault right now is the lack of rigidity in the assembled unit which has the roasting chamber and chaff catcher loosely perched on top of the base. This shows up not when you are roasting but when you move the unit or bump it (if you leave it on the counter): it can lead to the whole stack toppling over with potentially very bad results (the handle of my 8 broke off from such an accident). So I carefully put the unit back into the shipping carton after each use (I roast two batches at a session). It would be nice if there was some sort of locking feature that

Highly recommended. Fixes the two main problems with the FreshRoast8. This one has a digital timer in lieu of an imprecise dial timer, and twice the roasting capacity. With the digital timer, you get MUCH more consistent roasting times and results, and with the double capacity, it's much faster to get your beans for the week roasted. It's a stellar performer. DON'T carry it assembled, however. It's even less stable that way than the FreshRoast8, and it would be easy to drop and break the top pieces.

I've used the Fresh Roast and Plus 8 for personal use for several years (I grow Kona coffee), and stick to the simplest machines because if an electronic component goes wrong, the machine becomes useless. The SR300 is so far a great machine -- large capacity and quick roast (the 5.9 minute setting roasts at medium). I'm still leery of the electronic timer -- will see if it is hardy.
