Panama Geisha- 531

This Panama Geisha comes from the Janson Coffee Farm which is located in the Talamanca Mountain Range near the Tisingal and Baru volcanoes in Volcan, Panama. It is a family owned Hacienda that was established in 1941 by Carl Axel Janson. The farm's main focus is quality production. No pesticides, no herbicides! The balance of nutrients in the soil comes from using enzyme micro organisms. This farm is committed to improve and protect the environment by using solar panels to produce the energy for the farm, reusing all excess matter from processing for fuel and fertilizer, and seeds from the forests are planted in the nursery for reforestation and protection of water resources. Natural spring water is used for their Washed processing.

The Janson's processing plant was built in 1993. It was designed specifically for specialty coffee. They do Natural and Washed processing with updated technology added to artisanal methods to achieve the quality you will experience in this delicious bean!

Cupping notes: Balanced, juicy, crisp, mild, and smooth with flavor notes of milk chocolate, caramel, orange blossom, lemon, black cherry

Very smooth and subtle flavors. I probably would have rated it as "love it", except given the high praise I normally see for Geisha coffee, I was expecting a little more of a wow factor, relative to the Ethiopian organic yirgacheffe that I normally buy from Coffee Bean Corral (although maybe this just speaks to the quality of my comparable). Reading online, it says to go with a light to medium roast (definitely not dark), and to let it de-gas for 10-14 days (much longer than most beans). I followed these directions and was much more particular about my roasting and brewing process than usual, but I may try a few variations of each to see if I can get more out of it.

IN REPLY to post by richard on March 6, 2023 I’m guessing you didn’t read the part that says green coffee is RAW! You need to roast it before consuming. I’ve sold this coffee for years. One of their coffees even won the Best of Panamá auction recently. It wasn’t this particular coffee but all of their micro lots are excellent. Richard wrote: Bean won't grind down enough so I can brew the coffee. Looking online to see what I'm doing wrong. So far, no luck. Tried brewing one time and it was terrible., Truly terrible. No help on this site where I bought the coffee. Good thing it was only a small amount. All comments state the coffee is fantastic, so far I'm not with them. ———————

Probably going to have to make this my favorite bean, it’s well balanced and roast nicely.

This is a fantastic example of a geisha. I did a city/city+ roast, stopping once the first crack was almost entirely complete. The flavors are typically "tea-like," so it's best with no/little milk. It's a bit too floral for a latte - especially anything with a fair bit of milk. My wife likes 16oz lattes, and it doesn't have enough punch for those. In a 12oz latte it's good but probably not worth the price. But in a cappuccino, flat white, or straight shot it's superb. Can't speak to pour-over or similar as we're an espresso family. I used to love geshas more than anything. But lately I have been really drawn to the Hawaiian beans for their richness and fully profile. I was on the fence about getting more gesha, just because it seems my tastes have changed over the past couple years. This is an outstanding coffee. But I would say the lighter, more floral notes of geshas just don't resonate with me as much as they used to. This is a superb example of that - tea-like, floral, light and complex. So 5/5 for what it is and should be.

Geisha beans have a unique flavor profile. A lighter roast is required to bring out the subtle flavors. For a coffee this pricey it would be great if CBC would provide a roast profile for roasters to start with.

This was an interesting bean. On roasting, it was obvious that these were good quality beans. Not a bad bean in the bag. I roasted half as a light, and half as a medium. We did the medium first, and it was very good - caramel and blueberry notes. The light is amazing though. Citrus. Citrus. More citrus. I love this bean. I was not sure about the price, but wanted to see if I was able to REALLY see a difference. I highly recommend this coffee, and roast it light.

incredible stuff. I've been roasting for about 5 years w/ Behmore 1600 and I'm never able to quite reproduce a "George Howell" quality-level roast (for central american variety that I like - or Kenya AA/AB) no matter where I source the green beans from (and I'm sure my roasting skills are also to blame!), but these beans are at that level post-roast and perfect for a pour over. Light-to-medium roast on this one.

I screwed up the roast on this one. However it was still pretty good after sitting for a week.

Not only is the coffee delicious, but the roasting was a delight too. I roast manually, with a nut-roaster pan over an open flame, and I was struck immediately by the mellow aromas coming off the beans. It's a pricey brew, but I'm finding myself ripping through the 1/2 pound sample and ready for more!

It is just wonderful. Had the opportunity to visit farm 10 years ago and spent time with the Janson family while there. There are not enough good things to say. Picked up a couple bags when I was in Panama City recently and enjoyed my finally cup from that purchase this morning. Need to order some today. Always will remember Ricardo Janson, a remarkable man and think about him often since he passed.

This is my absolute favorite coffee bean. I prefer roasting this coffee to a very early second crack. It makes a very smooth cup of coffee with great flavor.

Light these had some good floral notes. Medium just at second crack, they are full of chocolate and caramel flavors. Just wow, some really great coffee you should try.
