Description

raw green bean Green coffee is raw Roast prior to consumption

This new Rwanda Organic bean comes from the base of volcanoes in the Northern Province. Abakundakawa which means 'those who love coffee', is a cooperative founded in 1999 that has made lots of changes in the local community. Even giving all the members of the cooperative access to health insurance. This coop offers one of the best beans in Rwanda and is known for pioneering the organic conversion program in the country.

The Hingakawa Women's Association is also a part of Abakundakawa. These women organized themselves into women empowerment organizations and are slowly helping Rwanda women's emancipation and position in society climb. Hingakawa means "let us grow coffee" in Kinyarwanda. The women who are in the Abakundakawa cooperative are also the heads of their families. They carefully select and process coffee beans and fetch special premiums with extra incomes that support themselves and their families.

Cupping notes: Pineapple, lemon verbena, grapefruit, berry, and honey sweetness.

Very satisfied with this bean. Took it right before second crack and that was the sweet spot for me , it made the flavors pop ! Looking forward to more of this in the future.

Bruce W Hermann Roasted this into the second crack. Resulted in a complex rich flavor. Will probably stop at the first of the second crack to try to brighten the flavor. Definitely one of my favorites.

I have been experimenting with different beans, different continents of origin, and this Rwanda organic coffee is one of the top two beans I enjoy. I use an electric hot air roaster, and like to roast this to a medium or medium dark roast.

Strong earthy flavor and aroma. Very earthy. Some bitterness and acidity. Plenty of caffeine. I find this bean a bit too earthy on its own, but it's perfect for blending with coffee beans that are almost too smooth and need some balance. I've been blending this bean in at about 10-15% with things like Costa Rica La Amistad and Columbian coffees that are rich in cocoa flavor with very little earthiness to them.

I roasted to a medium and the citrus fruits really came through especially grapefruit notes. I enjoyed this variety of Rwanda!

First roast to just after 2nd crack. I am new to roasting, but I have never tasted more flavorful coffee.

Newer to home roasting. I’ve done a couple of Ethiopians, Brazilian, and Costa Rican, and this Rwandan so far. This one is by far my favorite. Roasted light brings out a ton of floral and sweet flavors. As much as I want to roast a ton of different coffees, it’s proving to be difficult to choose any others at the moment.

Just finished my 2nd roast cup’n notes; normally wouldn’t write a review not having roasted 3+ pounds but seeing how there are so few reviews… My first roast cup’d Good to Very Good w/Hario & pairs/blends well with Uganda, Mt Elon & Haiti, Blue Norde. I drink my coffee black; my wife like hers w/hot milk. My second roast cup’d Hario only Fair to Good but espresso & cappuccino were VG to Ex. The beans need a minimum of 4 day rest for Hario and 5+ days for espresso. My first straight espresso was 10g Med-Dk paired with 6g of one of CBC’s several Brazilians with varieties: Mundo Nuovo, Catuai & Bourbon. Cappuccino were blends with CBC’s Sumatra, Mandheling & Guatemala, Santa Margarita or Bolivia Apolo or (a favorite Nicaragua Maracatu varietal). The twice sorting of 215g was gd & ex, #6 & 0 toss’d. In comparison when I sort Sumatra I’m toss’n 25–30+ beans. (Regardlesss of vendor some beans always are a chore to sort.) Size is smallish, 15-18/64s. I’m roasting with a SR800. I pre-heat to a temp display of 230° OFF & Drop at settings f=9, h=7, FCs setting was f=4, h=5. I did a double drop, at First-Krack +30° & at Second-Crack + 0:10 to an external cooling device / end of dry was at 3:30, FCs 8:05 w/roast chamber probe 378° (low-ish) & temp display @ 440° & SCs was 3:25 after FCs, & about 1:05 after partial dump, I usually have a minute recovery if the beans store heat well and these do. The 1st roast had a -16% weight lost & 182%ml expansion. My second roast was slightly hotter & faster, end of dry 2:45, FCs 6:55 (similar Maillard times) with a -17% weight lost & 186.5%ml expansion. I normally roast my espresso beans with a Hottop 2K+ w/Artisan where I have lots more control so I’m impressed by the versatility and forgiveness of these beans. I believe they are a new favorite.

Very tasty bean I discovered not too long ago from a sample pack. Very mild acidity compared to many coffees i've tried. Smells good and has a great taste at a city+ roast all the way to second crack.

Excellent Coffee. It has made my top 10 if not top 5 list. Best Coffee I've had in a long time. Different than anything I've had in a while. Medium Roast. Most of the chafe didn't come off.

This is the first time I've ordered green coffee, and love how this tastes. I'm not sure how to tell when it is at the perfect spot, as I'm roasting the coffee on a gas grill and roasting to a dark roast, but I am very much enjoying both the process and what I've roasted so far. The Rwanda Organic Abakundakawa Rushashi coffee is definitely a good one for a beginner.
