Description
This natural processed coffee comes from the Izuba Washing Station in Burundi's Kayanza Province. Izuba, meaning "sun" in Kirundi, is located in Runinya within the Kabarore Commune at 1500 meters above sea level. The washing station benefits from its strategic position near a river, providing essential fresh water for processing, and its proximity to Kibira National Park creates ideal soil and climate conditions for high-quality coffee production.
The coffee is sourced from three surrounding hills—Kigeri, Ryamukona, and Mugoyi—which serve as the primary collection areas delivering cherries to Izuba. The natural processing method begins with thorough floating to remove defective cherries, followed by extensive wet sorting to ensure only the highest quality fruit proceeds to drying.
The extended 30-day drying period on raised beds allows the natural sugars from the cherry fruit to fully penetrate the beans, creating the intense fruit-forward profile characteristic of this processing method. Harvested in March and exported in September, this coffee showcases the exceptional terroir of Burundi's highlands with its jammy sweetness and bright stone fruit character.
Cupping Notes: Jam, peach, and strawberry notes with vibrant stone fruit sweetness; high acidity, above average body; bright fruit-forward character with jammy mouthfeel and lingering sweet finish.
