Description

raw green bean Green coffee is raw Roast prior to consumption

Sumatra is Indonesia's second-largest island, and it’s filled with mineral-rich soil and diverse plant life. Grown in the shady slopes of Mount Leuser––near Pandang in the Batak area of Aceh––the Sumatra Mandheling coffee bean is born in the most mineral-rich land available in the world––volcanic soil. In addition to coming from an ideal coffee-growing environment, this bean cultivates in one of the world’s most ancient ecosystems. In fact, its namesake is the result of a language barrier in the culturally-diverse climate.

Cupping Notes: A medium bodied cup with bright acidity and the typical "clay" earthiness that marks the region. Complexity is refined with notes of orchid and orange and barest grapefruit. Pleasingly light in the mouth but not insubstantial, with very light aftertaste.

With the oil just appearing at surface and into the 2nd crack, this is one of our favorites and “must have” coffees. It is also in my perfect blend for dark roast, used for espresso and etc. 50% Brazilian, 25% Kenyan and 25% Sumatra. Technically should be all roasted separately rhen blended, but I roasted them all together. I am a popcorn popper roaster (love it), used 4 ounces of Brazillian, 2 ounces of Kenyan and 2 ounces of Sumatra for a 1/2 pound single roasting and it is incredible!

Holy wow is this delicious. I got it in a sumatra sampler in my last order and it outshines the others (all are respectably good though) . I did a dark city roast and I brew with a chemex. I cut it 50/50 with the most delicious bean (Bali Hai organic decaf) and it's an incredible blend. Back to buy 10 lbs of this beauty.

Roasted to start of second crack on my Behmor 1600. Great chocolate notes with hint of nutty flavor. Excellent for espresso.

Received for free in the Intl. Coffee Day Sample Pack (thanks CBC!). I've been wanting to try this, so that was easy. Roasted to Full City+ in an SR800 with extension tube. Took to 30 seconds into 2nd crack, ~ 500°, 9 1/2 minutes to cool cycle. I've read that Sumatran beans are very dense, and take heat well. Wanted a darker roast for this bean, but the roast actually got away from me a little and went slightly darker than I had intended. Still, the flavor of the bean wasn't overwhelmed by the roast. Bold, yet smooth. Earthy, but not scorched earth. Some dark roasts tend to "come up" on me, but this one didn't. Will try again at just slightly less heat and roast time to see how it tastes, but anyone who likes a solid dark roast, so much better than anything commercial, will be really impressed.

Awesome, fresh beans that roast dark and super oily. Awesome flavor, no acidity or bitterness! My new go to beans! Awesome, fast shipping also!

I hadn't ordered from this company before, and am really enjoying the flavor of the coffee. I also love the bag it is sent in. I'll be ordering again. Thank you.

Purchased as recommended, this has become my favorite coffee! I'm drinking a medium roast but will try others. This will definitely be my first 5 - maybe 10 - pound bag!

VERY good. My fist time drinking this one. Medium roast with a silky sheen, right before oils come out. The description stats earthy. I don't get that. My view of earthy may be different. I get a smooth mellow cup of hazelnuts, some fruits, and a hint of chocolate pudding. Yes, pudding.

I might say that any one just starting out with green coffee they try a lot of varieties. Every one has a different taste. I have tried several and have waited to write a testimonial. Did not want to discourage some one from something I did not like to well I am not to well known on all the cupping flavors but like my coffee with a robust flavor. The organic Sumatra Mandeling has just that. Prefer medium dark roast. Sumatra coffees are among my favorites.

This one is an amazing dark roast! Very smooth, not very much chaffe.

Good quality. I dark roast it and mix with Sumatra Mandheling or Timor Decaf for a pleasant half-caf.

Here is my easy recipe for making consistant cups of Poor Man’s Perfect Roast. Start by setting aside two bowls for transfering beans after roasting. Preheat on stovetop over medium/low heat one 12” cast iron skillet with enamel lid, preferably well seasoned from previous coffee ☕️ roasting. After three minutes of preheating add one cup SUMATRA ORGANIC MANDHELING and begin shaking immediately continuing nonstop for 7 minutes. Pause and remove lid to release steam while at the same time whisking beans to losen chaff. Place lid back on and shake for another 5 to 7 minutes. Check occasionally while continuing to whisk keeping the beans from over toasting for another 2 to 5 minutes. When beans are even and consistently cinnamon brown remove from heat, first crack does not happen. Transfer immediately to one of two bowls. Go outside and blow away the chaff while transferring from bowl to bowl. Fluff the beans by hand to further break chaff and then continue transfering. Once the chaff is gone tranfer to a mason jar. Cover jar with a coffee filter using the ring from the lid to keep it secured and in place to breathe. Store for at least 10 hours allowing gasses to release. This is by far the best method I gave found for roasting a healthy brew that is fresh, alive while featuring all of it’s sublte nuances and flavors without breaking the bank to buy an extremely costly roaster to achieve it. Roasting/toasting this way is primordial and stimulates memories of how our ancestors roasted coffee for thousands of years before the advent of modern roasters. Aside from this method being a great form of exercise it lends to an even greater appreciation of what goes into making the perfect cup of coffee.

Excellent quality, amazing good flavor especially light roasted to first pop. Only disappointed that it was purchased between Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale specials.

As an avid roaster, I have to note that this particular Sumatra is actually surprisingly sweet. Dropped at 395 on a Hottop, the sweetness was a nice surprise. Love this one!

I'm still new to the process of roasting coffee. However, I'm increasingly pleased with the result using the Sumatra Organic Mandehling FTO variety. I find it complex, but not overbearingly so, and somewhat chocolaty. It bears little resemblance to the Sumatra coffees I buy at my neighborhood market.

This was my first break with my new roaster. Sumatra is normally one of my favorites, however I found it disappointing in both medium and dark roasts. I am currently enjoying the Sulawesi, to which I will give high marks.

We love this coffee ☕️ so much it is one we constantly have on hand and order regularly. I am primarily both an organic and medium roast guy. But I do have a few exceptions. This coffee I do dark roast when used part of my own personal blend for an espresso, starts with, Brazilian, then Ethiopian and rounds out with this one from Sumatra! These three contributed to the freshest and best dark roasted espresso, I personally have ever tasted or presently ever intend, to not have on hand to grind and brew or ready to roast!!! And again, as a stand alone medium roast, it is on our list of “must have” to roast and enjoy!!!

As a Sumatra fan, I like even some of the more funky lots, but this one, purchased in November, 2108, is so perfectly balanced it can be enjoyed by all. You know it’s Sumatra, but it just has excellent balance in a medium dark roast, pour over prep or drip.

This was my first bean to roast myself. I have roasted it light medium and dark, and they have all been very good. The dark not as good, and I usually prefer dark. I will be ordering again sometime. Plenty of beans to last me a while. I will also experiment with some other beans.

Sumatra has been a long time favorite of mine, I especially enjoy the depth, as well as the depth it offers to blending with other coffees.
