I have been roasting and drinking a blend of Costa Rica (50%), Columbian (25%) and Ethiopian (25%) for a few years and love that.
However, I tried of sample of this Sumatran recently and it may be my new daily coffee. For me it's so smooth, deep, rich and has chocolaty mouth feel when I add some cream. I roasted this on the darker side (into 2nd crack maybe 30 sec) in an SR800. Definitely recommended to try this out.

Second-crack Mandheling -- THIS IS the coffee that punched my soul so hard 10 years ago, while 1C was...way too acidic for my taste. If you are looking for light roast fruity flavors, try something else. If you are craving some pick-me-ups, here you are!

I have roasted this coffee for years, loving the earthy (terroir) flavor and low acidity. I accidentally over roasted a recent batch (just to the point of oil showing on the beans after 1-2 days) that turned out to be delicious. When the cup cools, I could swear that there is dark chocolate and tobacco in the cup. I have gone from one clear favorite (Indian Monsooned Malabar) to now having several co-favorites.
I order nearly all my green beans from Coffee Bean Corral as they have the best prices and an excellent selection. Some like their burlap bags, I prefer their green plastic bags.

Tastes very good, roasted into 2nd crack. It just came with way to many defected beans and a lot of debri in the bag.

This has been my favorite Coffee for over 20 years. It seems to reach peek flavor about two days after roasting. I have tried other suppliers, and the coffee has definitely been lower grade with lots of chaff.

It has taken me awhile to get the flavor you expect from Sumatra. High heat, fast drum speed and roast well into the second crack appears to be the magic formula for these beans. Definitely a bean you want to roast outside as it produces a lot of smoke. Tastes wonderful when you get it right.

Superb! Roasted well past the second crack and cupped out in my Chemex!
Nice body, smooth, full flavor Sumatra. I think I need a 10lb bag a month! : )

Vienna roast on this and its the cats meow! I'm not one for high fruit so this fits right in, think Guatemalan high altitude.
Roasted on an SR800 since our pit is out of commission :-)

Very nice! Roasted it in an SR540; brewed it with a Hario V60 and in a French Press. Both were lovely!

I bought a sample size of this to see how it tastes. I roasted it on SR540 - first time, it came out so well - perfect coffee for me - dark, tasted fine - no bitterness etc - loved it - earmarked this as my #1 coffee bean for a long time. Second time brewing, same bean, same roaster, same settings came out very under-roasted - no idea what happened (I am new to roasting - still same qty, settings can't have such a vast quality difference), 3rd time, I did the roast with much longer time and came out ok....This is certainly a great bean....If there are any roasting experts here, pl guide me.
My settings are mostly 0-3.30 - F6P9; 3.30 - 5.00 - F6P8; 5-6.30 - F6P7; 6.30-7.30 - F6P6; 7.30 onwards cool down. I did hear two stages of cracks - first one at around 4 minute and second at around 6.30 mts....

One of my favorite "Daily Drivers" for a basic dark roast. I usually roast them to about 30 seconds into the 2nd crack on a FreshRoast 800 with extension tube. Give them a minimum of 48 hours to outgas. Dark, Earthy chocolate notes with low acidity and zero bitterness. Nice as a pour over or in a French Press. I haven't tried them as espresso yet.

Sumatran Mandheling is my favorite. Coffee Bean Corral offers great prices and quick service plus I like the burlap bag the beans are shipped in. Roasting the beans myself is a good way to save money and since I'm retired what else do I have to do?

Coffee Bean Corral had the best price I found. I like the heavy duty plastic resealable bags that they ship their coffee in. Ordering was a snap.

My wife loved it. I am not a big Sumatra fan. I will say the beans looked good though and they roast well. I will be purchasing this again in the future for the wife. Sorry I didnt give it a better review...I just am no fan of Sumatra and my wife doesn't do reviews.

Roasted about 30 seconds into second crack, pretty dark. Perfect dark roast. Heavy body but smooth. One of our favorites.

I haven't had the greatest of luck roasting Sumatra beans. These are good, but I think I need some additional practice. I've tried other lower grade Sumatran beans with less luck. Grade 1 has provided the best results for me.

I had a difficult time getting these beans to roast evenly, however the earth and rose flavors come through clearly.

This was my first time roasting and I bought these beans along with the sample pack. These are great beans. I roast these are am getting better at roasting everyday. I have found that after roasting these and leaving them in a dark place for a couple days they taste better. I also bought the sample pack and am looking forward to trying those beans as well.

I had for years been buying coffee beans from another distributor and now for the past couple years the beans they have sent me were either very low grade grade or a mix. Only because I have been roasting for years can I detect that. Anyway the beans from Coffee Corral have been spot on. After roasting my beans Specially the Sumatran beans I let the rest in a cool mainly dark area for three days minimum then grind and brew. Good beans Coffee Corral. Really appreciate it.

This is a new favorite - I find it shines in both Chemex and French press when roasted just into the second crack. As other reviewers have noted, chocolate notes and low acidity make it one of my "standard" beans to keep around.
