Description

raw green bean Green coffee is raw Roast prior to consumption

From the same material as the Mutu and Boru Batak coffee beans, the Raja Batak Peaberry is grown in the Lintong area just south of Lake Toba––the seeds are double-picked like its sister grades. Still, the added twist of the rare peaberry mutation (found in about 3% per production lot), results in a sweet flavor. The coffee is wet-hulled and completely sun-dried, as is the Sumatran standard.

Cupping Notes: The cup has medium body, slightly snappy acidity, and is clean with sweet flavor profile with rich notes of pipe tobacco and cedar, with subtle hints of sandalwood.

After sampling 5 different Sumatra coffees from this website, we decided that this is our favorite and just bought another 3 lb bag. I've roasted it just to the 2nd crack and about 30 seconds past it, both producing a fabulous taste.

This one is a big wow! Flavor galore and balanced. Dark roast always.

I'm generally reluctant to roast well-grown beans much past FC+, but this bean holds up really well into Vienna territory. If you roast for any of those "the darker the better" folks, this one will definitely get their attention. Even into second crack, the carbon/charcoal flavors you typically get out of darkly roasted beans take a back seat to the dense Sumatran terroir.

If I could give six stars, I would. I love Sumatra's in general, and this one fires on all cylinders as far as my favorite flavor notes go. Took these beans to City+. Nothing too crazy to note in the roasting process. (Which I LOVE the smell of, but there are some coffees out there that have a striking aroma in the process). The dry fragrance for the freshly ground beans was mild but sweet stone fruit. Wet aroma highlighted the cedar and stone fruit notes. Espresso was so incredibly sweet, and Americano (adding hot water to the espresso shot) helped distinguish the flavor notes. The stone fruit came out right away and defined itself as peach even as the cup was hot, and the cedar, brown sugar, and a hint of herbaceous notes (perhaps equivalent to CBB's description of sandalwood?) steadily increased as the cup cooled. The peach became more defined as the cup cooled as well. The body was nice and thick. The pour over highlighted a perfect earthy and fruity blend. The aroma while brewing was the best part! For a milk drink (Flat White), I use oat milk, so it takes a bit more “umph” for the flavor to power through. That being the case, this coffee did the trick! The earth tones shone through nicely. The peach was less potent, but was the more defined that in the other drinks. (Plus I’m a sucker for peaches-n-cream!) I've never experienced pipe tobacco, so I can neither confirm nor deny that flavor note that CBC recorded. lol :P

Really nice tasting cup! Roasted just past first crack with dark berry notes up front and caramel on the back. Very smooth. Will order that one again!!

This is not for everyone, but there is that funky Sumatran flavor that I'm addicted too. Roasted one light and one a bit darker on a Gene Cafe. The lighter roast is fantastic. The flavor is bold, but not overpowering. Notes of the usual tobacco/earthiness, but with a bit of sweetness.

When I bought this coffee quit a few months back it had no reviews on it, so i took a chance and purchased 1lb bag and roasted it with my Behmor coffee roaster. I was very surprised, and really liked this great clean taste. I often brew my coffees with my Bialetti pot which for some.people makes the coffee bitter as it has very little filtration, but I really like the way it brews coffee for me. I will buy this coffee again in future.
