Costa Rican Tarrazu - La Minita Estate

Compare this coffee with our other Costa Ricans

Not all coffees are created equal. As we know from our Kona experiences, there are differences in the coffee from one parcel to the next; each has its own unique micro-climate. Coffee from the famed La Minita Estate is milled by itself to maintain its integrity, as opposed to being combined with many farms in a 'co-op' situation.
It's a Tarrazu because it's grown in the Tarrazu region south of San Jose, grown high in the mountains under a natural shade canopy (called trees) and without the use of pesticides or herbicides. These are all good ingredients for an excellent coffee, which La Minita Tarrazu definitely is.
In my opinion, this is the most well-balanced, smoothest cup of coffee available for less than $15.00/lb!!

This was recommended by Mary Hunt of the Everyday Cheapskate fame. When I first got into roasting my own coffee beans, I bought this variety, and it is the *only* bean I now roast. We go thru about 50 lbs a year. I can't stand to even drink any other type of coffee now. The thing I like best about the La Miniata is that it does not leave an aftertaste in your mouth like so many of the commercial brands.

It may be a bit premature to give it five stars considering I've just begun to roast my own coffee and only tried a handful of varieties. However, I must say this Costa Rican flavor has me putting all of the rest up next to it only to find they just don't stack up. I made the mistake of purchasing several pounds of a Columbian at a great price and now I'm looking forward to the day when it is all gone so I can order some more of the this Costa Rican Tarrazu. Great coffee! ~Matt

I love it. One of the best ever!

As a fan of the rich, bold, full bodied Indonesian and African coffees, I decided to try this one specifically because it was described as smooth and balanced. I gave it a full roast and found it to be exceptionally smooth and light . It's a great coffee for mornings, for evenings, and for guests and entertaining. No one could dislike it. Its flavorful enough for bold coffee lovers and smooth/light enough for Kona/Jamaican coffee lovers too. A real winner. For me it served as a really nice variation in my morning coffee ritual. Some mornings I wanted BIG and BOLD so I ground my Indo/African roasts, other mornings I wanted SMOOTH and LIGHT and CR LaMinta surely hit the spot. I even found I could enjoy it in the evenings with a desert. I'll definitely order again. Maddie

My wife and I like this coffee mixed 50/50 with Brazilian and roasted to second crack. This gave us the subtle flavors of the Costa Rican with a little of the punch of the Brazilian. The first time I roasted the CR I did not roast it long enough and was disappointed. 2nd crack is just about perfect.

Home Coffee Roasting can be so rewarding, and fun, even moreso for those who enjoy experimenting. So many choices, so many variables; it makes my heart glad when someone discovers their "perfect" coffee...or blend.
