Cupping notes: Sweet character with well developed clean Chocolate/Nutty flavor. No floral or fruity notes detected ( which is unlike what was seen with the Kona Extra Fancy roast). Solid body and roast flavor, in spite of the short 17.3 percent development time. This bean seems tolerant.
Moisture loss was 14.1 percent, which is on par with other peaberry beans taken to this level of roast (City+). This is a higher percentage than what is seen with more typical beans.
Roaster: Gene Cafe CBR101, stock 2016 model
Ambient temperture: 87 degrees F.
Quantity of beans 227 grams/ 8 ounces by weight.
Preheat the EMPTY Gene Cafe Roaster for 5 minutes at 392 F.
Rapidly remove the drum and fill it with the beans, zero the timer. Put the drum with beans in it, back into the Roaster, start the timer, start the roast at 392 F. (Try to keep the stop, fill, replace, start well under one minute)
After 5 minutes of dehydrating the beans at 392 F, raise the temperature to 460 F and continue roasting. Start listening for first crack before the 10 minute mark. (This Peaberry makes a more detectable crack than other varieties of peaberry, a real plus).
One minute and ten seconds after first crack has started, lower the temperature to 440 F. Continue at this temperature until roast is complete.
For my batch, the beans were at full yellow at 5 minutes. By 6 minutes browning was evident. First crack was heard at 10 minutes and 20 seconds.
Temperature was lowered to 440 F at 11 minutes and 30 seconds.
Beans were pulled and force cooled at 12 minutes and 30 seconds.
First cupping was 18 hours later, and this "quick taste" is in the description above.
I only bought one pound of this bean, and hoped to nail it within two half-pound batches. Luck was on my side, and it all worked out with the first roasting. Looks like I get to enjoy the other half pound in the future.
This one is definately on the "Buy again list".
Who will like this bean? Those who like lighter roasts, with big chocolate/nut flavors along with a clean sweetness. Those who enjoy a solid body, and a lighter level of roast character. These beans will be visually darker than their "tasted level of roast" ; don't let the color fool you.
