How to Make Whipped Coffee (or Dalgona Coffee) at Home

Perhaps you’ve been living under a rock but one of the newest coffee “fads” to hit mainstream popularity, due in small part to the latest social media platform Tik-Tok, is that of whipped coffee. Originating in S. Korea during the initial lockdown of the pandemic, the video quickly went viral on the app and all across social media platforms.

Sometimes whipped coffee has been called dalgona coffee, the name refers to Korean sugar sweet treat of the same name, due in part to the resemblance between the two. However, whipped coffee does not have any dalgona within it.

It is super easy to make! It’s simply coffee that has been whipped into oblivion to form pillowy, beige peaks that it served atop chilled milk and often adorned with cocoa powder or chocolate flakes.

However, whipped coffee is often made using instant coffee (not a good choice for coffee lovers like us), so we decided to make ours with freshly brewed coffee! It is just as easy to make, but it will require some slight tweaks to dial in the right amount of each ingredient you need. For our whipped coffee recipe the biggest change is substituting instant coffee for a pre-brewed espresso.

If you don’t have an espresso maker handy, you can follow our guide here on how to make espresso without an espresso maker.

Ingredients Needed

  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • Ice
  • 4oz of cold milk (you can use almond milk if you prefer)
  • 4 tablespoons of hot espresso (we suggest using our espresso blend for this recipe)
  • 2 oz of cold expresso
  • Electric mixer (or your hands)
  • Cocoa powder for topping

Recipe

To start, mix the granulated sugar alongside the hot espresso together till the coffee mixture is foamy. Whether you use your hand whisk or a stand mixer is up to you. However, using an electric mixer will take a shorter amount of time and save you the wrist strain.

  1. Add ice, milk, and the cold expresso to a glass
  2. Pour over foamy, beaten coffee mixture over the milk
  3. Add cocoa powder for chocolatey topping
  4. Take a picture for Instagram
  5. Swirl together and enjoy!

Conclusion

While we are finally coming out of lockdown and resuming normal activity, we do not see the trend of whipped coffee going away any time soon. If you are like us, the thought of using instant coffee to make such a delicious treat that borders on blasphemy.

Such a delicious treat deserves to use the best ingredients, and with coffee being the star of the show its obvious to use the best coffee beans around to make the best whipped coffee possible. Hopefully, our little improvement on the recipe inspires you to make your own at home! Let us know how they turn out!
